# Dwarf Name Generator with Clan Names

Canonical: https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/dwarf/
Last updated: 2026-10-16

This dwarf name generator builds short, hard-edged given names and pairs them with clan names forged from stone and smithing words, like Anvilmantle or Coalhewer. Pick a gender and a name form, press Generate, and you get 10 dwarf names at once, with deed-names if you want them.

## Sample dwarf names

- Vemvu Stonemantle (Clan name: Stone-Mantle)
- Rodur Hammerborn (Clan name: Hammer-Born)
- Theldis Gravelhelm (Clan name: Gravel-Helm)
- Nugmeth Talloward (Clan name: Tallow-Ward)
- Ruknaek Tallowhelm (Clan name: Tallow-Helm)
- Krada Goldhand (Clan name: Gold-Hand)
- Thirdneda Bronzebrow (Clan name: Bronze-Brow)
- Tuth Tinhelm (Clan name: Tin-Helm)
- Grolgon Bronzehand (Clan name: Bronze-Hand)
- Thain Copperdelver (Clan name: Copper-Delver)

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/dwarf/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Set gender to Any, Feminine, Masculine or Neutral; feminine dwarf names close softer but keep their weight.
2. Choose Full name, Given only, Clan name only or With deed-name.
3. Press Generate names to get a fresh batch of 10 dwarf names.
4. Copy a name, favourite it for later, or copy the batch as Markdown into your session notes.

## What dwarf names sound like

Dwarf given names here are built from hard stops: b, d, g, k and t, plus clusters like br, dr, gr and thr. Syllables are short and closed, most names have one or two of them, and they land on a consonant. Say a few out loud and they sound like something set down on a workbench.

Gender lives in the ending. Masculine names close on -in, -ak, -or, -rik, -dur, -orn or -un. Feminine names use -ra, -hild, -eth, -unn, -run or -da, which close a little softer but keep the weight. Neutral names end on -i, -al, -ur, -en or -rin. The generator also blocks doubled hard consonants and four-consonant pile-ups, so you get “gruff” without “unpronounceable”.

## Clan names and clan identity

Clan names are English compounds: a stone, metal or forge word followed by a trade, tool or body word. Anvil plus mantle gives Anvilmantle. Coal plus hewer gives Coalhewer. You might also see something like Slatebrow, Copperhand or Barrelmead, and that last one tells you a lot about the family before anyone has spoken.

At the table, treat the clan name as the dwarf’s first answer to “who are you?”. A dwarf introducing themselves often leads with the clan, and other dwarves react to that before they react to the person. Before the session, decide one thing each important clan is known for. Coalhewers dig. Barrelmeads brew and owe money to half the hold. Two lines of notes and every dwarf NPC has a place to stand.

## Deed-names as character hooks

Switch the form to With epithet and each dwarf gets a deed-name: “the Twice-Buried”, “Lamp-Bearer”, “Who Held the Ninth Door”, “the Grudge-Writer”, “Who Owes Nothing”. A deed-name is a story the dwarf didn’t tell you yet.

That makes them great for players. Roll a few, pick the one that makes you ask a question, and answer it in your backstory. Who buried them the first time? What was behind the ninth door, and did they hold it alone? For NPCs, a deed-name gives the party something to ask about, and a reason to buy the next round.

A deed-name can also change during play. When a player’s dwarf does something the table will talk about for months, give them a new one and have NPCs start using it.

## Mountain and hill dwarves

The generator uses one dwarven sound system, but you can lean a batch in either direction:

| Dwarf flavour | Given names to pick | Clan names to pick |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Deep or mountain holds | Clusters like thr and gr, endings -dur, -rik, -hild | Granite, Basalt, Deep, Rune; gate, stair, ward |
| Hill or surface folk | Simpler names, endings -in, -a, -i | Barrel, Copper, Tallow; mead, mug, hand |
| Smith families | Names with k and g | Anvil, Forge, Cinder; bellows, tongs |

These are suggestions for your own world, not canon from any book.

## Grudges and records

Dwarves in a lot of campaigns keep careful records: debts, oaths and grudges, written down and handed on. A deed-name like “the Ledger-Keeper” or “the Grudge-Writer” turns that into an NPC role. Give one dwarf the job of keeping the clan’s book of grudges and the party now has a reason to be polite, or a very good reason not to be.

A simple trick: when the party wrongs a dwarven clan, write the clan name on an index card and keep it visible. The players will remember the name longer than any plot point.

## Pronunciation tips

- “Thr” is said as in “throne”.
- Hard g everywhere, as in “gold”, never as in “gem”.
- Stress the first syllable. Dwarven names rarely need more help than that.
- Clan names are English, so nobody at the table will trip on them.

For other species, the [D&D name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/) covers nine of them. ## Frequently asked questions

### How do dwarf last names work in D&D?

Here a dwarf’s family name is a clan name made of a stone or forge word and a trade or tool word, such as Anvilmantle or Coalhewer. Set the form to Clan name only to generate clan names on their own.

### What is a dwarf deed-name?

It is a title earned by something the dwarf did, like “the Twice-Buried” or “Who Held the Ninth Door”. Choose With epithet to add one to each name.

### Are there female dwarf names?

Yes. Set gender to Feminine and names end on -ra, -hild, -eth, -unn, -run and similar endings. Neutral and Any are there too.

### How do I share a batch of dwarf names with my players?

Copy the page URL. It stores your options and the batch seed, so anyone who opens the link sees the same 10 names.
