Last updated: 2026-10-16

This fantasy guild name generator builds guilds from original word banks and patterns, such as “The Honourable Company of Lamplighters” or “The Velvet Ledger”, and gives each one a trade, a sigil and a motto. Choose a guild type, press Generate, and you get a fresh batch of guilds for your city.

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/guild/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Choose a Type: Any, Merchants, Crafters, Thieves, Mages, Adventurers, Mercenaries or Scholars.
2. Press Generate guilds to get a batch of guilds, each with a name, trade, sigil and motto.
3. Copy or favourite the guilds you like, or use “Copy all as Markdown” for your city notes.
4. Share the page link to show your players the same batch; it carries the seed and your options.

## How guild names are built

Most guild names follow a few patterns, and once you see them you can make your own:

- The Company: “The Honourable Company of Lamplighters”. Formal, chartered, a little pompous. Good for respectable trades that want to stay respectable.
- The Order, Brotherhood or Sisterhood: suggests vows, ranks and secrets. Good for mages, scholars and anything with an initiation.
- The League or Union: suggests many members bargaining together. Good for merchants and mercenaries.
- The two-word image: “The Velvet Ledger”. An adjective and a noun that don’t quite belong together. Good for thieves and anyone who would rather not say what they do.

The generator mixes these patterns with its own word banks for each guild type. Long formal names are realistic: real trade bodies often had names nobody said in full.

## Public names and real purposes

Some of the best guilds in a campaign are fronts. A guild with a dull, respectable name can hide almost anything:

- “The Company of Chandlers” sells candles, and also rents its cellars to smugglers.
- “The Velvet Ledger” really is a bookkeeping firm. It just keeps two sets of books.
- A scholars’ society that has spent a century cataloguing one ruined tower, and isn’t going to say why.

To build one, generate a Merchants or Crafters guild, keep its name, then generate a Thieves or Mages guild and take its motto and sigil as the secret version. The players see the first. Characters who get inside see the second.

## Ranks and dues as hooks

Guilds give you two easy plot engines: rank and money.

Rank: give each guild three to five ranks, with names that fit the trade. Apprentice, journeyman and master work for crafters. Thieves might use something sillier. A player character who joins a guild has a ladder to climb, and every rung is a favour owed or a test passed.

Dues: guilds charge members, and members who can’t pay have a problem. Unpaid dues are a good reason for an NPC to need the party’s help, or to betray them. Guilds also charge non-members for the right to work in the city, which is why adventurers keep running into them.

## Guild types and naming vocabulary

| Type | Name words that fit | Sigil ideas | Motto tone |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Merchants | Company, League, Exchange, Ledger, Scale | Scales, coins, a ship | Prudent, proud of honesty |
| Crafters | Worshipful Company, Hall, Guild of …, Hammer | Tools of the trade | Pride in good work |
| Thieves | Two-word images: Velvet, Silent, Open Door, Lantern | A key, a mask, an eye | Dry, sly, a private joke |
| Mages | Order, Circle, Conclave, Lantern, Star | A star, an open book, a tower | Grand, cryptic |
| Adventurers | Company, Fellowship, Lodge, Compass, Road | A compass, crossed blades, a torch | Bold, slightly reckless |
| Mercenaries | Company, Band, Free, Iron, Banner | Crossed spears, a fist, a coin | Blunt, about payment |
| Scholars | Society, College, Archive, Quill, Lamp | A quill, a lamp, a key | Patient, curious |

## Using guilds at the table

Two or three guilds per city is enough for most campaigns. Make sure at least two of them want the same thing: the same warehouse, the same contract, the same apprentice. When the party arrives, both will try to hire them.

For guild members with personalities, the [NPC generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/npc-generator/) fills the hall, and the [shop generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/shop-generator/) can stock a merchant guild’s storefront.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I come up with a fantasy guild name?

Pick a pattern (Company, Order, League or a two-word image like “The Velvet Ledger”) and add a word from the guild’s trade. This guild name generator does that from original word banks and adds a trade, sigil and motto.

### Can I generate thieves guild names?

Yes. Set Type to Thieves and every result is a thieves guild, with a name it could use in public, a trade, a sigil and a motto.

### What types of guild can it make?

Merchants, Crafters, Thieves, Mages, Adventurers, Mercenaries and Scholars, or Any for a mix.

### Does the guild name generator need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, the generator works without JavaScript, and favourites are saved in your own browser.
