# Halfling Name Generator

Canonical: https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/halfling/
Last updated: 2026-10-16

This halfling name generator builds short, warm given names from rounded vowels and soft consonants, then adds a family name made of two homely words, like Applebrook or Kettlewhistle. Pick a gender and a name form, press Generate, and you get 10 new halfling names for a player character or NPC.

## Sample halfling names

- Linmin Kettlefoot
- Bory Dandelpot
- Fano Barleymantle
- Tirawyn Bramblerow
- Marmun Underwick
- Tas Honeywhistle
- Rotta Oakseed
- Ronoble Hearthwhistle
- Pata Bramblegather
- Roddon Brambledale

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/halfling/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Set gender to Any, Feminine, Masculine or Neutral; halfling family names don’t change with it.
2. Choose Full name, Given only, Family name only or With nickname.
3. Press Generate names for a fresh batch of 10 halfling names.
4. Copy or favourite the names you like, or copy the whole batch as Markdown for your notes.

## Names that sound like home

Halfling given names here are made to sound like something shouted across a garden at teatime. The consonants are soft and round: m, b, l and p do most of the work, with f, w, d and t for variety. The vowels are plain a, o, e, i and u, never two in a row, and no name starts with a vowel. Most names are two syllables, and the generator happily doubles a b, d, l, p or t in the middle, which is where names like Bobbin or Pella get their bounce.

The ending sets the gender. Masculine names close on -o, -in, -ry, -as, -ert or -wick. Feminine names use -a, -ie, -ella, -ina, -etta or -ly. Neutral names end on -i, -y, -o, -en or -ey. If a name is nearly right, keep the front and swap the ending: a Tobin becomes a Tobie with one change.

Nothing in these names is threatening. That is deliberate. A halfling rogue called Tobbin is funnier and more memorable than one called Shadowblade, and the contrast between the soft name and the sharp knife does the characterisation for you.

## Family names are reputations

Family names are compounds of two everyday words. The first half comes from the kitchen, the garden or the hedgerow (Apple, Bramble, Butter, Kettle, Nettle, Honey, Thistle, Pepper), and the second is a place or household thing (brook, burrow, hollow, patch, loaf, sock, whistle, thatch). That gives you names like Applebrook, Butterloaf, Nettlepatch and Kettlewhistle.

In a small community a family name works like a reputation. Everyone in the village knows the Bramblepatches keep bees and the Honeypots water their beer. Use that at the table. When the party asks a halfling NPC for directions, have them answer with gossip about a family instead of a street name: “past the Thistlehollows, and don’t take any cake if they offer.” Two lines like that and the village feels lived in.

If a player wants a backstory hook, ask them what their family name means to the neighbours. A proud old name, a name that’s a joke, or a name the family is trying to live down are all good answers.

## Nicknames earned in play

Switch the form to With nickname and each result gets a nickname, such as Quickfingers, Mudfoot, the Pie-Thief, the Unbothered or Who Found the Lost Goat. These read best when they sound like something a relative made up and nobody let go.

A nice habit for halfling characters is to start the campaign with no nickname and let the table give one. The first time the halfling does something memorable (falls in a river or talks the guards out of an arrest), someone at the table will name it. Write it on the character sheet. For NPCs, the nickname is often the name people actually use, which saves you remembering the family name at all.

## Picking for lighter or stouter halflings

There is one halfling sound system here, but you can steer it by what you pick from a batch:

| Flavour | Given names to pick | Family names to pick |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Nimble wanderers | Short, quick names ending in -y, -ie or -o | Travel and field words: dale, field, brook, foot |
| Stout homebodies | Fuller names ending in -ert, -wick or -ella | Hearth and pantry words: kettle, loaf, barrel, pot |
| River folk | Names with plenty of l and m | Water and reed words: Reed, brook, water |

These are GM choices, not rules from any setting. They help two halfling families in the same campaign sound related but not identical.

## Using halfling names at the table

- Give every halfling NPC a nickname and a family name. Players will remember one of them.
- Let halflings shorten each other’s names. A Pelletta is Pell to her cousins.
- Keep a short list of local families in your notes, generated in one batch, so village gossip stays consistent between sessions.

For other peoples, the [D&D name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/) covers every species on the site, and the [tavern name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/tavern-names/) will give that halfling village somewhere to drink.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do halfling last names work?

In this generator, a halfling family name joins two homely words, such as Apple and brook into Applebrook, or Kettle and whistle into Kettlewhistle. They read as plain English, so other characters can say and remember them.

### What makes a name sound like a halfling name?

Soft consonants like m, b, l and p, simple round vowels, two syllables and a light ending such as -o, -in, -ie or -y. Doubled middle consonants, as in Bobbin, add bounce.

### Can I get halfling nicknames?

Yes. Set the name form to With nickname and each name comes with one, for example Quickfingers, Mudfoot or the Unbothered.

### Can I share a batch of halfling names with my players?

Yes. Every batch has a seed, and the page URL carries the seed and your options, so sending the link shows your players the exact same 10 names.
