# Orc Name Generator

Canonical: https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/orc/
Last updated: 2026-10-16

This orc name generator builds short, guttural names from clusters like gr, kr and zg, and can add a tribe such as “of the Broken Tusk” or an epithet like “Who Laughs at Arrows”. Choose a gender and form, press Generate, and you get 10 orc or half-orc names at a time.

## Sample orc names

- Boag of the Last Crow
- Grushzuk of the Burnt Moon
- Shaur of the Burnt Spear
- Dhoka of the Iron Ridge
- Zukhkeg of the Gutted Moon
- Ushrega of the Split Fire
- Drori of the Bone Hand
- Ziash of the Black Spear
- Kroak of the Last Axe
- Goar of the Ash Boar

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/orc/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Set gender to Any, Feminine, Masculine or Neutral; feminine orc names often end on -a or -ga.
2. Choose Full name for name plus tribe, Given only, Tribe only, or With epithet.
3. Press Generate names for a new batch of 10 names.
4. Copy or favourite names, or copy the batch as Markdown to keep a war band’s roster in your notes.

## How orc names are built

Orc names here are short and front-loaded. They open on guttural clusters like gr, kr, zh, sh or dr, use back vowels (mostly u, a and o), and close on sounds like g, k, rz, zg, gh or rk. Most names are one or two syllables. They’re designed to be shouted across a battlefield or a crowded room and still be heard.

The ending shifts with gender. Masculine names tend to finish on -ak, -ug, -ash, -uk, -ruk or -gul. Feminine names end on -a, -ra, -ga, -esh, -ka or -agh. Neutral names use -u, -og, -az or -ur. Because the names are short, the ending is a big part of the sound, so if a result is close, try the same stem with a different gender setting.

## Orcs as people

Plenty of tables still run orcs as a faceless horde, and plenty of others play them as full characters with families, craft and politics. The generator doesn’t take a side. It gives you names that sound like they belong to one people, which helps either way: a raiding party where every orc has a name is scarier and more memorable than “orc 3”.

When you write orc cultures, build them from your world rather than borrowing a real-world group wholesale. Decide what your orcs value, how they settle disputes and what they think of the party. The names will carry the rest. Half-orc player characters can use these names as they are, or pair an orc given name with a human surname from the main [D&D name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/) to show which side of the family they grew up with.

## Tribe names as worldbuilding

Tribe names are always “of the” plus a blunt image: “of the Broken Tusk”, “of the Red Mire”, “of the Howling Drum”, “of the Third Spear”. Each one is a tiny map note. A tribe called the Red Mire lives somewhere wet. The Broken Tusk lost a fight once and decided to remember it. The Third Spear implies a first and second spear somewhere, and that’s a plot hook.

Generate a batch in Tribe only mode at the start of a campaign and pick three or four tribes for your region. Write one line for each: where they camp, what they trade or take, and how they feel about the nearest town. When the party meets an orc, the tribe name tells them who they are dealing with before the orc says a word.

## Epithets earned in play

Choose With epithet and each orc gets a name like “Ear-Taker”, “Who Laughs at Arrows”, “the Bargainer”, “Who Came Back” or “Spear-Mother”. Epithets work best as things that happened, not personality labels. “Who Came Back” makes the party ask from where.

For player characters, start without one and let the table award it. After the half-orc barbarian survives a fall nobody should survive, an orc NPC starts calling them something new. Players care much more about a name they earned in play than one they picked from a list.

## Naming a war band in a minute

A war band needs a leader the players will remember and a handful of names they can tell apart. Here is a quick method:

1. Generate one batch in With epithet mode and pick the leader from it. The epithet is how scouts and villagers will refer to them.
2. Generate one batch in Given only mode. Take four or five names that start with different letters, so the players don’t confuse Grukh and Gruz in the middle of a fight.
3. Generate a tribe name, or reuse one from your notes, and give the band a banner to match it.
4. Copy the lot as Markdown into your encounter notes.

If you need hit points too, roll them with the [dice roller](https://tools.rollrewind.com/dice-roller/). When survivors want to talk instead of fight, the [NPC generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/npc-generator/) gives you a motivation and a quirk on the spot.

## Pronunciation tips

- Read “zg” and “rz” the way they look, quickly, with no extra vowel.
- “Gh” at the end is a throaty sound like the “ch” in “loch”, or just a hard g if the table prefers.
- Stress the first syllable, always.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do orc names work in D&D?

In this generator an orc name is a short given name built from guttural clusters and back vowels, followed by a tribe name in the form “of the Broken Tusk”. You can also add an epithet such as “Ear-Taker”.

### Can I use this orc name generator for half-orc characters?

Yes. Use an orc given name on its own, or combine it with a human surname from the main name generator if your half-orc was raised among humans.

### Are there female orc names?

Yes. Set gender to Feminine for names ending in -a, -ra, -ga, -esh, -ka or -agh, or Neutral for -u, -og, -az and -ur endings.

### How do I generate orc tribe names?

Choose Tribe only. Each result is a tribe name built from a blunt adjective and an image, like “of the Red Mire” or “of the Split Fang”.
