This tiefling name generator for D&D builds infernal-sounding given names from sibilants, hard velars and Latinate endings like -os, -ius, -ia and -eth, and can add a virtue name such as Mercy, Vigil or Requiem. Pick a gender and a name form, press Generate, and you get 10 new tiefling names.

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/tiefling/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Set gender to Any, Feminine, Masculine or Neutral; it changes the Latinate ending, not the virtue names.
2. Choose Full name, Given only, Family name only or With virtue name.
3. Press Generate names for a fresh batch of 10 tiefling names.
4. Copy or favourite the ones you like, or copy the whole batch as Markdown for your notes.

## How the infernal names are built

Tiefling given names here mix hissing and catching sounds. The consonants are mostly z, k, s, m and v, with a rare x for bite and th or ph in the middle of longer names. The vowels are short and sharp: a, e and i do most of the work. Names run two or three syllables in most batches, and none have three consonants in a row, so even the harsh ones stay speakable.

The ending is where the old-empire feel comes from. Masculine names close on Latinate endings such as -os, -ius, -eus, -on or -akos, or on a clipped -ek or -ath. Feminine names use -a, -ia, -ira, -essa, -eth, -ith or -ys. Neutral names end on -is, -ex, -el or -ai. So you get names like Zarios, Mazakos, Kethia and Velex.

Family names are built the same way, just shorter: two syllables and a masculine or feminine ending, with no meaning attached. Many tiefling characters don’t use one at all, which is a choice worth asking the player about.

## Infernal name or virtue name

Set the form to With virtue name and each result gets a single English word in place of an epithet: Ardor, Lament, Mercy, Vigil, Requiem, Solace, Patience, Lantern, Riddle. Not all of them are virtues. Spite, Gallows, Reckoning and Sorrow are in the list too, because tieflings who name themselves rarely pick something sweet.

The choice between the two kinds of name is a character decision, and a good one to make out loud at session zero:

- An infernal name says “this is who I was born as”. It suits a tiefling raised by their own family, or one who has made peace with what they are.
- A virtue name says “this is who I decided to be”. It suits someone who left home, rejected a family name, or wants to be judged by a promise.
- Using both is common. Kethia at home, Vigil on the road.

## What a virtue name says about upbringing

Ask who chose the word. A tiefling named Patience by an anxious human parent has a different story from one who picked Spite at fourteen and never let go. A name like Requiem or Lament hints at loss. Lantern or Solace hints at someone who expects to look after others. Penance hints at guilt the character may not have earned.

For NPCs, a virtue name is a fast shortcut. Players will remember a tiefling innkeeper called Mercy long after they forget the town’s name, and they will assume she has a past. Let them.

## Mixing with human surnames

Plenty of tieflings are born to human families, and their names show it. Pairing a tiefling given name with a plain human surname (Zarios Millford, Kethia Thatchwright) says “raised in an ordinary village, looks nothing like the neighbours”. Pairing a virtue name with a human surname reads as a church or orphanage naming. Use Given only here and pull surnames from the [human name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/human/), which has five invented cultures to choose from.

## Pronunciation

- Read x as “ks” in the middle or end of a name, and as “z” at the start.
- c before e or i is soft (s), otherwise hard (k). Pick a rule and keep it for the campaign.
- Stress the second-to-last syllable: za-RI-os, ma-ZA-kos, ke-THI-a. That habit keeps the Latinate endings sounding right.
- If a player stumbles over their own character’s name in the first session, shorten it. Zar is fine.

For other species, the [D&D name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/) has them all, and the [backstory generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/backstory-generator/) can give that virtue name a reason.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do tiefling names work in D&D 5e?

Tieflings in most games either use an infernal-sounding birth name or choose a virtue name, a single word like Mercy or Vigil. This tiefling name generator makes both: set the form to With virtue name to get them together.

### What are some tiefling virtue names?

The generator draws from words like Ardor, Lament, Mercy, Vigil, Requiem, Solace, Patience and Lantern, plus darker picks such as Spite and Reckoning.

### Do tieflings have last names?

Some do. Set the form to Family name only for short infernal-sounding family names, or pair a tiefling given name with a surname from the human generator if the character grew up in a human family.

### How do you pronounce tiefling names?

Read x as “ks” mid-word, stress the second-to-last syllable, and keep the endings crisp: -os, -ius, -ia. Decide on hard or soft c early and stay consistent.
