# Fantasy Tavern Name Generator

Last updated: 2026-10-16

This tavern name generator gives you complete fantasy inns, not just names: each result has a name like “The Crooked Eel” or “The Fox and Fiddle”, a description of its sign, a house specialty and a rumour the regulars whisper about. Pick a vibe (cozy, rowdy, seedy, upscale or roadside), press Generate, and drop the one you like into your next session.

## Sample tavern names

- **The Nine Keys** (roadside). Sign: a weathered sign nailed to the trunk of a dead oak. House special: cheap beds above the stable. Rumour: the cook was a soldier and still keeps a sword under the counter.
- **The Five Fishes** (upscale). Sign: a gilded sign lit by its own lantern after dark. House special: a sampler of five imported cheeses. Rumour: a regular has paid for every drink with the same gold coin, which keeps coming back.
- **The Anchor and Bell** (cozy). Sign: a carved wooden sign with a little brass bell that chimes in the wind. House special: rabbit and leek pie. Rumour: two rival guilds both think they own the back room.
- **The Sleepy Hedgehog** (cozy). Sign: a carved wooden sign with a little brass bell that chimes in the wind. House special: a dark, sweet brown ale. Rumour: a map is hidden somewhere in the panelling.
- **The Merry Pudding** (cozy). Sign: a round sign hung low enough that tall guests duck under it. House special: pear brandy the owner makes herself. Rumour: the last three owners each left town suddenly.
- **The Ivory Crown** (upscale). Sign: a gilded sign lit by its own lantern after dark. House special: a sparkling pale cider. Rumour: the cellar connects to a tunnel nobody has followed to the end.
- **The Honeyed Teapot** (cozy). Sign: a round sign hung low enough that tall guests duck under it. House special: honey cakes still warm from the oven. Rumour: the stuffed bear by the fire was a person once.
- **The Gilded Sceptre** (upscale). Sign: a discreet brass plate by the door instead of a sign. House special: pheasant in plum sauce. Rumour: a famous bard died here owing a tab, and the tab is still pinned behind the bar.
- **The Noble Peacock** (upscale). Sign: an enamelled sign commissioned from a city artist. House special: a sampler of five imported cheeses. Rumour: someone has been leaving warnings carved into the tables.
- **The Nine Bells** (upscale). Sign: an enamelled sign commissioned from a city artist. House special: iced elven wine. Rumour: the last three owners each left town suddenly.

## Use it

Open https://tools.rollrewind.com/tavern-names/ in a browser. The tool works without JavaScript: options and a seed travel as query parameters of the HTML page, so a link reproduces the same results.

## How to use

1. Choose a vibe: Any, Cozy, Rowdy, Seedy, Upscale or Roadside.
2. Press Generate taverns to get a fresh batch of taverns.
3. Read the sign, specialty and rumour for each and pick the one that fits your scene.
4. Copy it, favourite it, or use “Copy all as Markdown” to keep the whole batch in your notes.

## Why taverns have picture names

Old inn signs were pictures because many customers could not read. A painted swan, a bell or a pair of crossed keys told a traveller where to stop and gave the locals a way to give directions: meet me at the Swan. That is why traditional inn names are so concrete. Each one is something a sign painter could draw.

The generator follows the same rule. Every name is built around an image, using one of five patterns:

| Pattern | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The [Adjective] [Noun] | The Sleepy Hedgehog, The One-Eyed Jackal | the most common; adjective and noun both follow the vibe |
| The [Thing] and [Thing] | The Moon and Mallet, The Goose and Gauntlet | two unrelated pictures, often alliterative |
| [Founder]’s [Place] | Mother Pell’s Parlour, One-Ear Gil’s Cellar | named after whoever runs it, or ran it |
| The [Number] [Things] | The Seven Lanterns, The Three Keys | invites the question of where the others went |
| The [Noun]’s [Place] | The Drover’s Rest, The Barrel’s Taproom | a trade or object plus a word for the house |

The vibe changes the word banks. Cozy taverns get kettles and honey cakes. Seedy ones get eels, gallows, watered rum and rooms by the hour. Upscale houses get swans, chalices and a bard who actually takes requests. Choosing Any mixes all five in one batch.

## Inn, tavern or alehouse

These words were not interchangeable, and the difference is useful in play:

- An inn offers beds, meals and stabling. It sits on a road and serves travellers. The party sleeps here.
- A tavern sells wine and food but traditionally not lodging. It is in town and serves locals. The party hears gossip here.
- An alehouse is the cheap end: ale, a fire, a bench, often in someone’s front room. The party meets the people nobody else will talk to here.

In most fantasy games every drinking establishment has rooms upstairs, and that is fine. Pick a word anyway; it tells players what kind of crowd to expect before they walk in.

## Running a tavern scene in five minutes

You do not need a floor plan. You need four things, and the generator gives you two of them.

1. One sound and one smell. A fiddler who knows two songs. Wet dog and onions. Say both before anyone orders.
2. The sign and the specialty. Read the generated sign description as the party walks up, then have the barkeep push the house specialty on them. “Pickled eggs from a barrel of unknown age” does a lot of work.
3. One memorable patron. Not five. One person with a voice and a reason to be there. The [NPC generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/npc-generator/) gives you a name, look, voice and secret in one click.
4. A hook. Use the generated rumour. Put it in the mouth of the patron, not the barkeep, so the players have to ask.

After that, let the players drive. If they are still in the tavern twenty minutes later, they like it there, and you can let it become their base.

## Give every tavern one thing players remember

Players forget names. They remember the sign with a hoof-shaped dent in it, or the bard who died owing a tab that is still pinned behind the bar. Each generated result has one odd detail in the sign or the rumour. Keep it, repeat it every time the party comes back, and the tavern will stick.

A few habits help:

- Keep the same barkeep for the whole campaign, and let them age and change.
- Let one rumour turn out to be true. Players will check the others for years.
- Name the tavern’s town with the [town name generator](https://tools.rollrewind.com/names/town/) and note which inn is in which place. A link to the batch keeps the seed, so you can find it again.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good name for a fantasy tavern?

Something a painter could put on a sign: an animal or object with an adjective, like The Rusty Hook, or two unrelated pictures joined by “and”, like The Wren and Wheel. Concrete images are easier for players to remember than clever puns.

### Can I use this as an inn name generator?

Yes. Every result works as an inn, tavern or alehouse. The Roadside vibe leans towards travellers’ inns with stabling, cheap beds and porridge at any hour.

### Does this work as a D&D tavern name generator?

It is built for D&D campaigns and other fantasy games. Each tavern comes with a sign, a specialty and a rumour you can use as a plot hook straight away.

### What does the vibe setting change?

It changes the adjectives, nouns, sign descriptions and house specialties. Seedy taverns get crooked rats and backroom dice games; upscale ones get gilded swans and imported cheeses.
