How to use the name generator

  1. Choose a species: Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Dragonborn, Halfling, Gnome, Tiefling, Human or Goliath.
  2. For humans, pick one of the five cultures, from Northern seafarers to Highland clans.
  3. Set gender to Any, Feminine, Masculine or Neutral, and choose Full name, Given only, the family-name option (house, clan, tribe or surname, depending on species) or the epithet/nickname option.
  4. Press Generate names for a batch of 10, then copy single names, favourite the keepers or copy the whole batch as Markdown.

How the generator builds a name

Each species has its own sound system: a weighted set of opening consonants, vowels, closing consonants and endings, plus a syllable count. The generator assembles names from those pieces, so it is not drawing from a fixed list, and the gender setting changes the endings it can pick. Family names come from a second system for each species: elven house names are compounds from an invented lexicon with an English gloss, dwarf clan names are stone-and-forge compounds, orc tribes are blunt images, and dragonborn clan names are longer, harsher words in the same tongue as their given names.

Filters throw out awkward letter clusters, accidental real words, famous character names and profanity before you ever see them, and every batch is de-duplicated. The seed under the results goes into the URL, so sending the link to a player shows them the exact same ten names.

What each species sounds like

GoliathOpen, booming syllables with k, g and thClan name plus an earned nickname such as Cliffwatcher

Humans get five invented cultures, each with its own phonology and surname pattern. Northern seafarers use patronymics ending in -son or -dottir and sea words like Salt or Rime. Riverland farmers get trade-and-place surnames along the lines of Millford or Hedgewright. Desert traders carry a short prefix joined to a family name. Imperial city folk end in -us, -ia and -ius. Highland clans take Mac, Ap or Ni before the clan name. Pick the culture that matches the region your character grew up in, and a party of humans will stop sounding like four people from the same village.

Picking a name that fits the character

Start from how other characters will say the name, not how it looks on the sheet. A gruff sellsword with a four-syllable lilting name is a joke, which is fine if you meant it. Some quick tests:

  • Say it in the voice you plan to use. If it doesn’t fit your mouth, it won’t fit the character.
  • Check the first letter against the rest of the party. Three names starting with K get confusing by session two.
  • Switch the form to With epithet/nickname. An epithet like “Who Remembers Ice” or “the Twice-Buried” often hands you a backstory hook for free.
  • Use Given only for a quick list, then Full name once you have a favourite, to see it with a family attached.

Names players can say out loud

Your table will say this name hundreds of times. Two syllables beats four. Avoid apostrophes and silent letters unless you’ll explain them every session. If the generator gives you a long name you love, decide on a short form on day one; the party will shorten it anyway, so you may as well pick the nickname. When a cluster like “zg” or “thr” trips people up, tell the table how you say it once and write it in the shared notes with a rough spelling such as “KRAZ-gul”.

Naming NPCs fast

Improvised NPCs need names in about two seconds. Before the session, generate a batch for each species likely to show up, copy them all as Markdown, and paste them into your notes. Cross names off as you use them. Favourites stay in your browser on that device, so star the ones you want to keep for recurring characters. For a full NPC with a trait and a hook, use the NPC generator, and when the party asks what the inn is called, the tavern name generator has you covered.

Each of the most-used species also has its own page with naming conventions and pronunciation notes: elf names, dwarf names, orc names and dragonborn names.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best D&D name generator for characters?

Use one that builds names from a sound system for each species instead of reshuffling a short list. This one does that for nine species and five human cultures, with gender and name-form options, and it lets you share any batch by link.

Can I use these names in my published adventure or stream?

Yes. Generated names are free to use in home games, streams and published work, and no credit is needed.

How do I get the same names again?

Every batch has a seed shown under the results, and the URL stores your options and the seed. Bookmark or share the link and it reproduces the same ten names.

Does the D&D character name generator do last names?

Yes. Choose Full name for a given and family name together, or the family-name option for just house, clan, tribe or surname results. Each species uses its own family-name style.

Is this a name generator for DnD only, or other games too?

The species follow fifth edition’s player options, but the names are original and system-free. They work just as well in other fantasy RPGs, OSR games or your own homebrew setting.

What does the Neutral gender option do?

It uses a separate set of endings that read as neither clearly feminine nor masculine. Any mixes all three sets in one batch.
