Goliath Name Generator

What goliath names sound like
Goliath birth names here are built to carry across a valley. The consonants are k, g and th, with m, n, l and v to soften them. The vowels are open, mostly a, with o and u behind it. Names are two or three syllables, never stack three consonants together, and never put two vowel pairs in one name, so they stay easy to shout.
Endings carry the gender. Masculine names close on -ak, -ok, -ath, -an or -ulo. Feminine names use -a, -ani, -ka, -tha, -uli or -ena. Neutral names end on a bare vowel (-i, -u, -o) or on -eth or -al. That gives you names like Kalak, Thoka and Vanuli.
Three names: birth, nickname, clan
Set the form to With nickname and each goliath gets the full three-part name. For example: Kalak Stormshepherd Gamuni.
- The birth name is given by family and rarely changes.
- The nickname is a compound of a thing from the mountains (Stone, Sky, Peak, Storm, Root, Bear, Eagle, Thunder) and a deed (watcher, carrier, climber, breaker, shepherd, thrower). Stormshepherd, Peakwatcher, Rootcarrier, Cloudclimber, Bearthrower.
- The clan name is a longer phonetic word in the same sound system, two or three syllables, like Gamuni or Thalaneth.
The nickname is the interesting one, because it describes something the goliath did.
Earned nicknames as a play loop
Treat the nickname as something the character can lose and win. It works well as a small, recurring reward:
- At character creation, the player picks a nickname from a batch, or starts with none and uses the birth name only.
- When the goliath does something big at the table (holds a collapsing bridge or carries a wounded friend out of a fight), pause after the session and let the other players propose a new nickname.
- Generate a batch with the nickname form for inspiration, or build one by hand from the same pattern: a thing plus a deed.
- The old nickname is retired. Some tables keep a list of them on the back of the character sheet as a record.
This gives a goliath player a reason to chase deeds that aren’t just damage, and gives the rest of the table a say in the character’s story. It also works for NPC goliaths: a guide called Rootcarrier who is now called Bridgebreaker has had an eventful season.
Clan names
Clan names are the long part of the name and the part outsiders hear least. Use them for introductions, oaths and funerals. In everyday speech a goliath goes by birth name and nickname. A clan name is a good hook too: two goliaths from the same clan in different parts of the world have a reason to meet, or to avoid each other.
How to say them
- th is soft, as in “thin”, not as in “the”.
- Stress the first syllable of two-syllable names and the middle of three-syllable ones: KA-lak, va-NU-li.
- Keep the a open, as in “father”.
- Nicknames are read as plain English compounds. Players can and should translate them in their heads.
Keep your goliaths your own
Published books for fifth edition include sample goliath names, and plenty of tables reuse them. This generator doesn’t: every birth name and clan name is built by code from the sound rules above, and the nickname banks are original. If you want names nobody at your table has seen in a rulebook, generate a batch and pick from that.
For the rest of the party, the D&D name generator covers every species on the site, and the encounter generator can give your goliath something on the mountain worth a new nickname.
Frequently asked questions
How do goliath names work?
In this goliath name generator, a full name has three parts: a birth name, an earned nickname such as Peakwatcher or Rootcarrier, and a clan name. Choose With nickname to get all three.
What is a goliath nickname?
It is a compound of a mountain thing and a deed, like Storm plus shepherd, describing something the goliath did. Many tables change the nickname when the character earns a new one.
Can I get goliath clan names only?
Yes. Set the form to Clan name only and each result is a clan name of two or three syllables in the goliath sound system.
Are these the same as the sample names in the books?
No. Every name is generated from original sound rules and word banks, so you won’t be copying any book’s sample list.
