What gnome names sound like

Gnome given names here are built to bounce. The consonants are short and clicky: b, d, z, p and k, with n and t to fill gaps and the odd sn- or fl- at the start. The vowels lean bright, with i, a and o most common. Names run one to three syllables plus an ending, so you get anything from a crisp Zix to a tumbling Nibbozzelle. The generator allows doubled b, d, p, z and l in the middle, which is where the fizz comes from.

Endings carry the gender. Masculine names close on -o, -in, -ix, -ock, -ble, -ik or -dle. Feminine names use -a, -i, -elle, -ina, -ra, -wyn or the very gnomish -oodle. Neutral names end on -i, -o, -ix, -et, -y or -ip. Want a name to sound more mechanical? Pick one with -ix or -ock. Softer and more whimsical? Look for -elle and -oodle.

The long-name joke, and how to use it

A long-running bit in fantasy games is that gnomes have far too many names: one from each parent, a few from grandparents, a nickname or three, all said in full at introductions. It’s a good joke once. Here is how to keep it from wearing out:

  1. Pick one given name, one clan name and one nickname from a batch. That’s the gnome’s everyday name.
  2. Generate a second batch with Given only and copy four or five names into your notes. That’s the full formal name.
  3. Use the full version exactly once, the first time the gnome introduces themself, and let them run out of breath. After that, everyone uses the nickname.

The payoff comes later. When the gnome is in real trouble, or being knighted, or getting scolded by an aunt, someone says the full name again and the whole table knows the scene has turned serious.

Clan names and nicknames

Clan names are compounds of tinker words. The first half is a part or a sound (Gear, Cog, Spark, Fizz, Sprocket, Wobble, Thimble), the second a tool or gadget word (wick, spring, gauge, pocket, flask, spindle, buckle). That gives you Gearwick, Fizzspring, Cogspinner, Thimblepocket and Wobblebuckle. They tell you at a glance what a family is known for, or what they blew up.

With the nickname form you get names like Boomer, Clockheart, Whizbang, Owl-Eyes, Oops and Badger-Friend. Nicknames are where you hint at a backstory. A gnome called Oops has a story, and the players will ask for it.

Rock gnomes and forest gnomes

There is one gnome sound system here, but you can push it toward either common flavour by picking from the batch:

FlavourGiven names to pickClan and nickname angle
Tinkers and rock gnomesShort, hard names with z, k and -ix or -ock endingsGear, Cog, Sprocket; nicknames like Boomer or Whizbang
Forest gnomesSofter names with l, n and -elle, -ina or -o endingsMoss, Bramble, Thimble; nicknames like Badger-Friend or Owl-Eyes
Travelling showfolkLong three-syllable names that rollGlimmer, Puzzle, Whirl; nicknames like Dazzle

These are table choices, not setting rules.

Bonus: naming inventions

Gnome PCs build things, and the things need names. The same word banks work well. Take a clan-name compound and add a function: the Fizzspring Self-Stirring Kettle, the Cogspinner Mark III. Or reuse a nickname for a device: a crossbow called Whizbang, a clockwork owl called Clockheart. Generate a batch with Family only to get ten product names at once. If you want a random gadget for loot, the magic item generator is a good partner.

For other peoples, the D&D name generator covers all the species on the site.

Frequently asked questions

How do gnome names work in D&D?

In this generator, a gnome has a bouncy given name, a clan name built from two tinker words like Gear and wick, and an optional nickname such as Whizbang. Many tables play gnomes as having several more names used only on formal occasions.

What makes a name sound like a gnome name?

Clicky consonants (b, d, z, p, k), bright vowels like i and a, doubled middle letters, and playful endings such as -ix, -ock, -elle or -oodle.

Can I generate gnome clan names only?

Yes. Set the name form to Clan name only and each result is a clan name, such as Fizzspring or Thimblepocket.

Does the gnome name generator need JavaScript?

No. The form submits to the server and the names are rendered there, so it works with JavaScript turned off and needs no sign-up.
